What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a post-secondary learning option for individuals interested in learning a skilled trade. Apprentices work in many fields (electricians, carpenters, cooks, mechanics, service sectors, and more). Some general facts about apprenticeships are:

  • On-the-job training (typically 80%) and learning at a school or training center (about 20%)
  • Generally takes about 2-4 years to complete
  • Apprentices earn wages while they work and attend school
