Dear Modesto City Schools families and staff,
As we prepare to begin the 2025–2026 school year, I want to acknowledge that while this is an exciting time for many, some families may also feel anxiety due to concerns about potential immigration enforcement.
Rest assured: Modesto City Schools remains fully committed to the safety, well-being, and success of all students, regardless of immigration status, race, ethnicity, religion, ability, sexual orientation, or economic background. Consistent with the law and with our own Board of Education policy, our schools do not ask about or track the immigration status of students or their families; and we do not share personal or confidential information with outside agencies without the permission of their parents.
Administrators at all of our schools are informed about the rights of students and are aware that for an immigration enforcement action to take place, federal agents must first provide a valid warrant or court order. Schools in California must follow this guidance.
Detailed guidance to schools, from the California Attorney General, is linked here. Additionally, the links below will direct you to helpful guidance for families, which is available in both English and Spanish, also from the Attorney General:
Guidance for Families – English
Guidance for Families - Spanish
We know that many in our community are feeling stressed and anxious, but our commitment to supporting students has not changed. Every student, regardless of immigration status, has the right to a free public TK–12 education, and our schools are here to support every child.
Students and families should not feel alone or unsupported. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your school directly. Counseling and support services are available to help students process their thoughts and feelings without judgment. Thank you for helping us make our schools a welcoming place for all.
Sincerely,
Dr. Vanessa Buitrago
Superintendent
